Shubman Gill is a young opening batsman for the Indian cricket team who has made a name for himself in world cricket at a young age. He represents Punjab in domestic cricket as a explosive right-handed batsman. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he plays for the Gujarat Titans. At 24 years old, Gill has cemented his strong position in Team India based on his skills and performances. Shubman Gill was born on September 8, 1999, in Fazilka, Punjab. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, is involved in farming, and his mother’s name is Kirat Singh. Shubman has a sister named Shahneel Gill. He had a keen interest in cricket from childhood. While Shubman’s father also aspired to become a cricketer, he couldn’t pursue it himself. Instead, he decided to nurture Shubman’s talent and guide him to become a good cricketer. Seeing his son’s potential in cricket, he became involved in shaping Shubman’s cricketing career.
Career:
Shubman Gill received his early education from Manav Mangal Smart School located in Mohali, Punjab. He studied there until the twelfth grade. Observing his keen interest in cricket, Shubman’s father enrolled him in a cricket coaching center, where he received training in cricket and honed his skills to improve his game.
International Carrie
In February 2017, Shubman Gill played a key role in India’s U-19 cricket team’s series win against England U-19. In December 2017, he was named vice-captain for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and had a successful tournament, scoring 372 runs and being named player of the tournament.
He made his ODI debut for India in January 2019 and became the youngest Indian batsman to score a double century in a first-class match in August 2019. Gill made his Test debut in December 2020, helping India win against Australia and scoring his maiden Test century against Bangladesh in December 2022.
In January 2023, he scored a double century in an ODI against New Zealand, becoming the youngest batsman to do so in men’s international cricket. He also scored his maiden T20I century in February 2023, becoming the 5th Indian batsman to score a century in all formats of international cricket. In January 2018, Shubman Gill was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for ₹1.8 crore (US$230,000) in the IPL auction. He made his Twenty20 debut for KKR in the 2018 Indian Premier League on 14 April 2018, scoring 203 runs that season. In March 2019, he was named one of eight players to watch by the International Cricket Council (ICC) ahead of the 2019 IPL tournament. Gill scored 296 runs in the 2019 season and won the Emerging Player of the tournament award.
In 2020, Gill scored 440 runs, making him the highest scorer for KKR that season. During the 2021 IPL, he scored 478 runs, being KKR’s highest scorer once again. 2022–present: Gujarat Titans
Ahead of the 2022 IPL auction, Shubman Gill was drafted by the newly formed Gujarat Titans franchise for ₹8 crore (equivalent to ₹8.5 crore or US$1.1 million in 2023). In the 2022 season, Gill scored 483 runs as the Titans won the IPL title in their inaugural year.
In the 2023 season, Gill scored 890 runs, becoming the second-highest run-scorer ever in a single IPL season and winning the orange cap. He became the fourth player to score back-to-back centuries, with 101 against SRH and 104* against RCB. Gill also achieved the season’s highest individual score of 129 off 60 balls in Qualifier 2 against MI, setting a record for the highest-ever score in an IPL playoffs match. Despite Gill’s stellar performances, the Titans lost to the Chennai Super Kings in the final.
